Glenn is carrying a really useful discussion just now on the role of Sunday services for Churches and the movement toward smaller faith communities.
Glenn has beaten me to it in many ways, not on this particular issue but on the thread of discussion that is taking place. I wrestle with this question - what will a rebirth, reimaging or reconversion of the Church look like for meaningful ministry in this world?
Thoughts?
What a great question. As one who is often involved in sunday am services where I serve full time I can relate to the almost disproportional sense of investment one can make. Yet if you are preaching then that can become consuming and no one will deny how they can be shaken up by God via a powerful message. I guess the simply answer to your Q re reimagining is really a 'rediscovering' of community with sunday -or whatever day for the larger gathering - as only one part of the whole; the end of Acts 2 outlines the others - small gps, ministry to each other/ the poor, miracles, large gatherings, the Lord's supper etc. I think that without the life of the Spirit any changes in outward form are dead anyway, a mere tinkering. We need to actually meet with God and each other when we meet, not "browse the shelves." Be a contributor vs. a consumer. I know that does not address philosophical issues viz-a-viz modernity/post-modernity but the life of the Spirit is still key....
